Southampton FC Women produced a commanding performance to beat Portsmouth Women 4–0 in the Women’s South Coast Derby at St Mary’s, in front of a crowd of 7,561 on Friday evening.
Portsmouth started brightly and nearly took the lead in the 13th minute when Tia Primmer was played through on goal, staying onside by the narrowest of margins. However, Bourne and Goddard recovered well to dispossess her as she attempted to pull the ball back just inside the box.
Southampton responded with control and quality, opening the scoring in the 22nd minute. A brilliant cross from Abigail Ferguson down the right-hand side found Jess Simpson, who finished calmly to give the Saints the lead. Ferguson was a constant threat and stood out throughout the first half.
Pompey felt they should have had a penalty in the 28th minute when Primmer received an excellent ball into the box before going down under pressure from the Southampton centre-backs, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The Saints doubled their lead in the 31st minute through Ellie Brazil, who powered home a stunning header from a Tara Bourne cross. At that point, Southampton had scored twice from just two shots on target, while Portsmouth were still searching for their first.
Brazil continued to cause problems, forcing goalkeeper Gray to rush off her line in the 35th minute to deny her another effort. Portsmouth finally registered their first shot on target in the 44th minute, a long-range effort from Angelina Nixon that posed little trouble for Stenson in goal.
At half-time, Southampton held a deserved 2–0 lead.
Portsmouth came out with renewed intent in the second half and were unlucky not to pull one back in the 64th minute when Meg Hornby rattled the crossbar. Despite some promising spells, Southampton’s defence remained resolute, limiting Pompey to just two shots on target all game.
The match was effectively settled in the 78th minute. Tegan McGowan made a perfectly timed run to go one-on-one with the keeper. Her initial effort was saved, but the rebound fell kindly to Mary Bashford, who made no mistake to make it 3–0.
Just two minutes later, substitute Aimee Palmer added a fourth, scoring moments after coming on to put the result beyond doubt and send the home crowd into celebration.
Rachel Brown also made a welcome return to the pitch after nearly a year out injured, adding to the positive night for the Saints.
Eight minutes of stoppage time were added, during which tempers flared late on, culminating in a heated disagreement between the two teams in the 98th minute that required referee intervention.
At full-time, it finished Southampton 4–0 Portsmouth.
Mary Bashford was named Player of the Match, capping off a superb performance. Bashford and Jess Simpson now both sit on four goals for the season, making them Southampton’s joint top scorers.
Overall, it was an end-to-end contest, with Portsmouth creating some good opportunities, but Southampton’s defensive organisation proved flawless. The Saints restricted Pompey to only two shots on target and recorded their third consecutive win, extending their unbeaten run against Portsmouth to ten matches.
Hampshire remains firmly red — and for anyone yet to attend a Southampton Women’s game, this derby was the perfect example of the high-energy, high-tempo, and entertaining football on offer.
